Fill in your Form 843

You have the penalty notice and want the form done tonight. This Form 843 generator fills in the official IRS PDF in three steps; you check it, add your Social Security number by hand, sign and mail it. If you would rather not wait on a mailed form, a licensed tax pro can ask the IRS by phone.

Three steps: the penalty, the reason, your name, ending in a filled Form 843 PDF

Already paid the penalty and want it back? The Form 843 instructions give two limits. Generally, you must claim within 3 years after filing the return or 2 years after paying the tax, whichever is later. Check both dates before you start. A 2024 return filed on April 15, 2025 has until April 15, 2028, unless a later payment gives you a later date.

The boxes start with example answers for a made-up person. Change them to yours.

  1. 1 Your penalty
  2. 2 Your reason
  3. 3 Your name and address

Step 1. Which penalty, which year

Step 2. Why it should come off

Step 3. Name and address, as on the return

The form has a box for your Social Security number. Leave it to write by hand after you print. We never ask for it.

Example Example: Form 843 for Odette Brandt, a made-up person

Line 2 asks the IRS to remove $800 for tax year 2024, under section 6651(a)(1) and 6651(a)(2).

I have since filed the return and paid, or set up payment for, the tax owed. Please also remove the interest charged on this penalty. Thank you. Signed: ______________________ Date: ____________

How the lines get filled

The lines follow the IRS Form 843 instructions. Line 6 takes the code section for your penalty, and line 7 is box c for a good reason or first-time removal. If the penalty came from wrong written IRS advice, line 7 is box b and the top box is the one for section 6404(f).

Before you mail it, you can also call the IRS yourself with the first-time removal script. The line-by-line guide explains each box.

What to do now

Talk it through by phone

You have the penalty notice and a Form 843 in front of you. A mailed form has no set processing time, and a licensed tax professional can ask the IRS to remove the amount for you, by phone first. Call now with the notice and they will tell you the fee before you agree.

Call 833-859-3657

A licensed tax professional answers during business hours. The call costs nothing, and you are not signing up for anything. Form 843 Help is a private service, not the IRS, and your details go to one tax professional only.

  1. You call during business hours and say which penalty and tax year you are looking at.
  2. A licensed tax professional reads your notice with you and checks first-time removal and reasonable cause.
  3. You hear the options and the fee for filing before you agree to anything.

Or send the details about your penalty

You would rather write than call about your penalty. A request that names the wrong rule or misses a year can be turned down, so a licensed tax professional checks it first. Send the penalty, the tax year and the amount from the notice.

Sending this costs nothing and signs you up for nothing. One licensed tax professional contacts you once, during business hours, by the phone or email you gave, and your details go nowhere else. Privacy
